”Stop collecting money forcefully from
residents of state” -Lagos state commissioner of police
Hahaha, this is interesting! The new Lagos Commissioner of police, Edgal,Imohimi has warned the police officers to stop following residents of the state to ATM to collect money. You don’t understand right? Okay, what the commissioner is saying is that it has come to his notice that there are police officers who collect money from residents with impunity,as if it is their right to do so. In situations where residents do not have money on them, the police would choose to go as far as escorting them to any ATM around, wait for them to cash money, and then, give to them! Hence forth, let everyone hear that the police have been warned: ”Stop following residents of the state to ATM to forcefully collect money” -Commissioner of police,Lagos.
Is this the only warning that the commissioner could give the police? What of the situation where police officers would collect money from every commercial vehicles, and resolving to hold still and delay whoever that refuses to comply to their unnecessary demand? Is that not unlawful? Is the commissioner of police not also aware that his officers on the road cause a lot of road accidents while commercial drivers are trying, finding their ways to dodge the police from taxing them unlawfully?
There is another thing that the commissioner of police should know. In fact this is not only for the commissioner of police in Lagos state, but in all states in Nigeria. It is the fact that some police officers are bought with money and will be asked to arrest someone,a free citizen who has not committed unlawful act for which he or she should be arrested. Some Nigerians use money to intimidate their fellow citizens by buying police officers with their money. In as mush as the police have been warned: ”Stop following residents of the state to ATM to forcefully collect money”,they should also warn the police,to desist and avoid being used by some powerful people,to intimidate less powerful citizens to the point of being detained in cell.
Talking about warning police to desist following residents to ATM to forcefully collect money from people,is there any penalty for a defaulter? Are there other things the commissioner of police should look into???
