On May 7th 2018,the National Agency For Food and Administration and Control _NAFDAC) shut down threes pharmaceutical companies for producing Codein syrup,a medication for relief of cough and pain.
The companies shut down were Emzor Pharmaceutical Industrial Limited Lagos,Peace Standard Pharmaceutical Limited,and Bioraj Pharmaceutical Limited Ilori,Kwara state.
NAFDAC Director-general,Professor Mojisola Adeyeye gave this directive yesterday following meetings held with the companies and its directorates of Investigation and Enforcement (I&E),Drug Evaluation Research,(DER) and Narcotic and Controlled Substance (NCS).
At the same meeting,NAFDAC director-general would pay administrative fees commensurate for violations.
The agency also ordered for immediate stoppage of Codeine syrup and importation of it until further notice:
“Embargo has been placed on new applications for permit or renewals for the importation of codeine as an active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations- NAFDAC will not issue any permit until further notice” says director-general.
Finally,NAFDAC directed Emzor company to arrest the sales representative indicted in BBC documentary or declare him wanted for investigation.
